Pasaulinio vandenyno vidutinis druskingumas siekia 35 ‰. Jį lemia valgomoji druska (NaCl), sudaranti 77 % visų jame ištirpusių druskų. Pagal vandenyje ištirpusių druskų kiekį (‰) išskiriamos pusiau sūrios (oligohalinės), vidutiniškai sūrios (mezohalinės), labai sūrios (polihalinės) ir tikrosios – stabilios jūrų sritys. atitikmenys: angl. salinity vok.
